Back to School, Back to Feeling Like You Don’t Fit In?

It’s so not easy going back to school after doing all the things you love in the summer. It can be super hard going back, especially if you use a wheelchair.

Maybe you’re super lucky and you go to a school where everybody is cool and could care less if you use a wheelchair.  Schools like this really do exist. I’ve heard of them, but my school was definitely not one of them.  When I had to go back to school after breaking my neck, it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.  None of my friends knew what to say to me or how to act around me.  Suddenly I was all alone.

Tips for kids with disabilities about going back to schoolI think a lot of kids who are able-bodied don’t know how to act around us.  Most of them probably have never known someone with a disability, so they don’t know how to react or what to say. When I went back to high school all my friends stopped talking to me. I wanted to get mad, but then I realized they were just clueless. I felt bad for them instead.

Now if I could go back in time, I definitely would do things differently in high school and had a way better time.  The biggest thing I would’ve done differently is tried to be more confident, even though I didn’t feel that way.  I should’ve pretended, even if it wasn’t true (nobody would have known any different). Being confident, not looking down at the ground as you roll down the hall is a great way for people to approach and respect you (and make friends too!).

I would also get involved more, even if I was the only person in a wheelchair doing the activity. One of the hardest things if you use a wheelchair is being the one person there who’s in one. It can feel pretty lonely.  But…if you don’t get involved because you don’t want to stick out, before you know it you won’t be doing anything fun at all and you‘ll be graduated. Where does that get you?

The most important thing I would’ve done: Stop being paranoid about my wheelchair and thinking everybody was looking at me all the time. I think we can sometimes over think things, which can make other people nervous. Just try to be cool, calm and collected at all times. You’ll be surprised at how people respond to you.
